Presentation
The goal is to reach the famous Laguna De los Tres, the closest point to Monte Fitz Roy that a hiker can reach by walking on a trail in the National Park. This is a high physical demand activity, aimed at those travelers who want to explore trails that cross native forests and mountain rivers, with unique views of the glaciers and peaks of El Chaltén.
Itinerary
The excursion begins at 5:30 a.m., when the company's minibus picks you up from your accommodation in El Calafate. Once all passengers are on board, the vehicle heads to El Chaltén, which you will reach after approximately three hours, traveling along a large section of National Route 40. Halfway through this beautiful scenic drive across the vast Patagonian steppe, you will begin to see the Southern Andes, where the unmistakable silhouette of Mount Fitz Roy stands out above the surrounding granite peaks.
Upon arrival in El Chaltén, at approximately 8:15 a.m., there is a short stop for anyone wishing to use the restroom before starting the hike. At this point, the trekking guide(s) join the group and accompany participants throughout the hike.
The hike begins at the Río Eléctrico Bridge, located 15 km north of El Chaltén along Route 41. Box lunches are distributed here, and the group starts trekking at around 9:00 a.m.
The first section climbs to the Piedras Blancas Glacier Viewpoint, then descends gradually to the Meeting Point, located near Poincenot Base Camp.
From there, the group splits:
- Group 2 continues with a guide to the beautiful Laguna Capri, where lunch is served before a relaxed descent back to El Chaltén.
- Group 1 continues toward Laguna de los Tres, passing through Poincenot Camp and crossing the Blanco River. The final section is demanding and technical, featuring a steep mountain ascent, but rewards hikers with increasingly spectacular views of the Fitz Roy massif.
At around 1:30 p.m., the group reaches a glacial moraine ridge offering an unforgettable view of Fitz Roy and Laguna and Glacier De los Tres. Weather and trail conditions permitting, this is the ideal place to enjoy lunch while taking in the scenery.
After the descent, both groups meet again and return to El Chaltén via Laguna Capri, completing a total hiking distance of approximately 12 km. Arrival back in town is between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
